A cancer diagnosis is overwhelming and scary for everyone in a family. DeKalb Medical cancer patients are encouraged to involve their entire family in their treatment including children to foster understanding and calm fears. The Tree House Gang support group offers children an opportunity to talk, learn, and share their experiences about a parent, grandparent or family member with cancer. The program gives children encouragement, education and hope for the future.
Tree House Gang Coordinator and Cancer Center Nurse Navigator Rose McKeever (pictured with members of the group) reports that many alumni come back to work with current members and several go on to work in the healthcare field because of their positive experience with the support group.
During the holidays, Tree House Gang kids design greeting cards to raise funds and create awareness for the group. Each card is uniquely illustrated by the members and proceeds go towards outings and educational activities.
The Tree House Gang is free and open to children between five and 18-years-old. A new session begins in January.
